Karl’s Yoga Background
Karl’s first yoga teacher, in the early 1980s, was a student of Swami Satchidananda. His main teacher has been his brother, Erich Schiffmann, as well as Lisa Walford and Sarah Powers. For almost fifteen years, he studied with Anusara Yoga (John Friend). His teachers have mainly been from the Iyengar tradition, but he has studied extensively and is influenced by the vinyasa flow, kundalini and viniyoga traditions.
Other teachers include Gary Kraftsow, Manousso Manos, Rodney Yee, John Schumacher, Patricia Walden, Elise Miller, Judith Lasater, Rod Stryker, K-Lea Gifford, Maty Ezraty, Shiva Rea, Paul Cabanis, Tracy Rich, Steve Ross, Yolanda Clements, Leslie Bogart, Jillian Pransky, Patricia Sullivan, as well as Lais da Silva and Tina Brandt, previously of the Santa Barbara Yoga Center.
Karl earned his Teaching Certification from the Santa Barbara Yoga Center and taught there regularly for five years (1997-2002). He apprenticed mainly under Erich Schiffmann, and during one year, assisted almost every one of his Wednesday evening classes at Yoga Works in Santa Monica, as well as substituted teaching for him when he was away.
Karl was listed as an Affiliated Anusara Teacher, and is also registered nationally as a teacher with the Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT 200 level, citing over 1300 hours of teaching experience. Currently, he teaches regularly at the Santa Barbara Athletic Club.
